Turkey's top division, founded in 1959 and played home and away from August to May, known for its atmospheres and its Istanbul derbies.
What the Süper Lig is
The Süper Lig is the top professional division in Turkey, founded on 21 February 1959. It is an open structure, sharing promotion and relegation with the TFF 1. Lig below it.
Its story is bound up with three Istanbul clubs — Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş — who have traded the title between them since the early years. All three draw support from across the country, not only from their own city.
The first club to break Istanbul's hold was Trabzonspor, from the Black Sea coast, who won the title in 1975-76 and have been the fourth force in Turkish football ever since.
Format and how points work
Every club plays every other home and away, with three points for a win and one for a draw. The size of the league has changed several times over its history, anywhere from 16 to 22 clubs, so the number of matches per season has moved with it.
Where it differs from the Premier League is the tie-breaker. The Süper Lig looks at the head-to-head record between the tied clubs first, before goal difference and goals scored, so meetings between clubs chasing the same position are worth more than three points.
Clubs near the top take the UEFA places Turkey's coefficient earns, and the domestic cup winner also qualifies for Europe. At the other end, the bottom clubs are relegated to the TFF 1. Lig.
Derbies and atmosphere
What Turkish football is best known for abroad is the noise inside its grounds. Turkish supporters are famous for singing through the whole match, and meetings between the big three are the most closely watched fixtures of any season.
The best known of all is Fenerbahçe against Galatasaray, called the Intercontinental Derby because Fenerbahçe are based in Kadıköy on the Asian side of Istanbul and Galatasaray on the European side, with the Bosphorus between them.
The shape of a season and kick-off times
The season starts in August and finishes in May, usually with a winter break partway through.
Turkey has stayed on UTC+3 all year round since 2016, with no daylight saving, so Thailand is always four hours ahead — there is none of the twice-yearly shift that comes with leagues in western Europe. An 8pm kick-off in Turkey is midnight in Thailand. Every time on this page is already converted to your own zone.
