About this competition

England's top division: 20 clubs, 38 matches each, running from mid-August to May.

What the Premier League is

The Premier League is the top tier of professional football in England. It was formed in 1992 when the clubs of the old First Division broke away from the Football League to negotiate broadcasting rights themselves. The competition structure stayed tied to the English pyramid: clubs are promoted into it and relegated out of it, rather than holding permanent places as they would in a closed league.

Part of what makes it so widely followed is how plainly it is decided. Every club plays every other home and away, there are no conferences or end-of-season play-off for the title, and whoever has the most points after 38 matches is champion.

Format and how points work

Twenty clubs contest a season. Each meets the other nineteen twice, once at home and once away, giving 38 matches per club and 380 across the league. Scoring is the standard three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat.

When clubs finish level on points, the Premier League separates them on goal difference first, then on goals scored. That differs from several European leagues, which look at the head-to-head record between the tied clubs before anything else. It is why goal difference carries real weight in the closing weeks, and why sides in a winning position often keep pushing for more.

The table on this page carries the full set of columns — played, won, drawn, lost, goals for, goals against, goal difference and points — alongside each club's last five results, so recent form sits next to the season-long picture.

European places and relegation

Clubs finishing near the top earn places in UEFA club competitions the following season: the highest positions lead to the Champions League, with the Europa League and Conference League below. The number of places a country receives is not fixed from year to year — it follows that league's standing in UEFA's coefficient rankings, and is also affected by which clubs win the domestic cups.

At the other end, the bottom three clubs are relegated to the Championship, the division below, and three come up in their place: the top two automatically, and a third through a play-off between the clubs finishing third to sixth.

Having both a prize above and a drop below means very few matches are dead rubbers late in the season. Even mid-table clubs are competing for finishing positions that carry real money.

The shape of a season

The season starts in mid-August and finishes in May, broken up by several international windows. One distinctive feature of English football is the festive programme, which packs matches unusually close together over a short stretch, where most other major European leagues take an extended winter break instead.

Beyond the league, clubs also play the FA Cup and the League Cup, and those who qualify play in Europe as well. For the busiest squads that makes certain months extremely congested, and it is a large part of why managers rotate as heavily as they do.
