About this competition
Saudi Arabia's top division: 18 clubs, 34 matches each, in a season that runs from August to May.
What the Saudi Pro League is
The Saudi Pro League is the top professional division in Saudi Arabia. Its first official season was 1976-77, as the Saudi Premier League, and since 2022-23 it has carried the sponsor's name Roshn Saudi League.
The turning point came in June 2023, when the country's Public Investment Fund (PIF) took a 75 percent stake in the four clubs that have been ever-present in the top flight — Al-Hilal, Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli — as part of a national sports club privatisation project.
A wave of internationally famous signings followed, and the league has drawn far wider international attention since.
Format and how the table is decided
Eighteen clubs play each other home and away, 34 matches each. Three points for a win, one for a draw. The club with the most points at the end is champion; there is no play-off.
Clubs level on points are separated by their head-to-head record first and goal difference after that — the reverse of the Premier League, which applies goal difference first.
The bottom three are relegated to the First Division League, the tier below, and its top three are promoted in their place.
The route into Asia and the domestic cups
The leading clubs qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite or the AFC Champions League Two, the Asian club competitions as restructured from 2024-25. The number of places depends on Saudi Arabia's standing in Asia and on the domestic cup results.
The main domestic cup is the King's Cup, and there is also the Saudi Super Cup.
The calendar and kick-off times
The season starts around August and finishes in May, close to the European calendar.
