About this competition

South Korea's top division: 12 clubs, 38 matches each, played within the calendar year and split in two for the final rounds.

What K League 1 is

South Korea's professional league was founded in 1983 as the Korean Super League with five member clubs. It became the K League in 1998, and the top flight has been called K League 1 since 2018, with K League 2 beneath it.

It is one of the oldest professional leagues in Asia, and its format differs from most leagues in two ways — the late-season split of the table and the tiebreaker for clubs level on points — both explained below. For anyone new to the league, those are the two things worth knowing first.

Format: three rounds, then the split

Twelve clubs play each other three times, 33 matches each. The table then splits in two: Final A for the top six and Final B for the bottom six. Each club plays the others in its half once more, for 38 matches in total.

Points carry over, so the split is not a reset — it simply means the last five rounds are played between clubs chasing the same thing. A club in Final B cannot finish above one in Final A, however many points it collects after the split.

Another difference from most leagues: when clubs are level on points, K League looks at goals scored before goal difference, so a free-scoring side is favoured even if it concedes more.

Relegation and the play-offs

The bottom club is relegated directly to K League 2, while the clubs just above it enter promotion-relegation play-offs against K League 2 sides to keep their place — so Final B carries as much at stake as the title race.

At the top, the leading clubs qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite or the AFC Champions League Two. The number of places depends on Korea's standing in Asia and on the Korea Cup, the domestic cup renamed from the Korean FA Cup in 2024.

The calendar and kick-off times

K League follows the calendar year, starting in late February or early March and finishing in late November, so seasons carry a single year such as 2025 rather than a European-style split.

South Korea (UTC+9) is two hours ahead of Thailand (UTC+7): a 19:00 kick-off in Korea is 17:00 in Thailand, and afternoon matches in Korea fall around midday to early afternoon Thai time. Every time on this page is already converted to your own zone.

Frequently asked questions

How many clubs are in K League 1 and how many matches do they play?

Twelve clubs. They play each other three times for 33 matches, then five more after the split, for 38 in total.

What are Final A and Final B?

After 33 matches the top six go into Final A and the bottom six into Final B, and each club plays the others in its half once more, with points carried over.

How are clubs level on points separated?

By goals scored first, then goal difference — unlike most leagues, which apply goal difference first.

How does relegation work?

The bottom club goes down directly, and the clubs just above it play off against K League 2 sides to keep their place.

When is the K League season played?

Within the calendar year, from late February or early March to late November.

What time do K League matches kick off in Thailand?

Korea is two hours ahead of Thailand, so a 19:00 kick-off in Korea is 17:00 in Thailand.
